About Chaifetz Arena

Chaifetz Arena is a small indoor arena located on the campus of Saint Louis University. It is a 10,600 seat arena in St. Louis, Missouri. This arena was opened to the public on April 10, 2008 and has served tens of thousands of fans each month across a variety of exciting events. But few get larger crowds than home games for the university basketball teams.

History

The idea for the new arena came thanks to Richard Chaifetz, CEO of ComPsych Corporation and 1975 STU graduate. In February 2007, he made a $12 million donation to the university, so the new arena was named in his honor.

Since the 2008-09 season, it became the home for the university’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. It also has an attached Chaifetz Pavilion that includes a two-court basketball and volleyball practice facility that doubles as an 800-seat venue.

The first event held at the new venue was a Harlem Globetrotters game against the Washington Generals on April 11, 2008. It was also used by Barry Manillow for an inaugural concert held on April 25, 2008. The venue also held the first on-campus commencement ceremony in over 60 years on May 17, 2008.

Since then, the venue has seen use by multiple organizations for athletics events, sports entertainment events, as well as rallies and major conventions.

Basketball Team Summary

The Saint Louis Billikens men’s basketball team is the college men’s basketball program for Aint Louis University. They compete as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference at the NCAA Division I level. Currently, head coach Travis Ford leads the team and they play their home games out of Chaifetz Arena. To date, the team has reached the championship game of the NIT tournament four times and have won once. And they have appeared in the NCAA Division I tournament ten times, with their most recent run coming in 2019.

Travis Ford era

Travis Ford was announced as head coach on March 20, 2016. He was hired to turn things around for a team that had been unsuccessful with an 11-21 season for the previous two seasons under previous head coach Jim Crews.

At the time, the team lacked any standout talent, so SLU predictably finished last in the conference during the 2016-17 season. The team was predicted to go winless throughout its conference schedule, but Ford turned things around and led the team to six Atlantic 10 conference wins and an overall 12-21 record. And under his leadership, the team is expected to continue to grow and develop into a stronger squad.
